RANCHI:
This arrest, which came just minutes after his resignation, triggered a cascade of political upheavals that shaped the state's polity throughout the year, culminating in two major electoral battles—the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections—that delivered mixed outcomes for the BJP-led NDA and the JMM-led INDIA bloc.
Change of guard
Soren's arrest by the federal agency from Raj Bhawan, minutes after he resigned as chief minister, led to the transfer of power to Champai Soren, one of the senior-most leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), who had worked shoulder-to-shoulder with party chief Shibu Soren.
Champai led the INDIA bloc government for five months until July 3, when Hemant Soren returned to power, three days after securing bail from the Jharkhand high court.
The state polity witnessed both Lok Sabha elections in the summer and Jharkhand Assembly elections later in the year.
The two elections yielded mixed results, with major political alliances—the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the JMM-led INDIA bloc—finding reasons to celebrate.
