The council will also develop another climate-controlled tulip propagation and storage chamber in the facility in Lodhi Garden over the next two months for the "indigenisation" of the bulbs. At the storage chamber, harvested tulip bulbs will be propagated in a controlled environment by altering relative humidity, temperature, light, and exposure to ethylene, which is a plant hormone that regulates the process of aging.
The chamber can cater to 36,000 bulbs at a time with 240 trays each comprising 150 bulbs, according to a senior NDMC official.
More than 550,000 tulip bulbs will be imported this year from the Netherlands.
