LIAM McHALE quit his role with Mayo due to having a “totally different philosophy” to the rest of the management team.
It emerged last month that McHale had stepped away as a coach/selector after just one season having come on board under Kevin McStay, his brother-in-law, who was appointed as manager 12 months ago.
Former club and county team-mates, McHale and McStay have worked together extensively in management and coaching, winning an All-Ireland club title with St Brigid’s in 2013 and a Connacht Championship with Roscommon four years later.
But, with Donie Buckley, Stephen Rochford and Damien Mulligan also on the ticket, it didn’t click this time.
McHale, speaking about his departure for the first time on Ballina Community Radio, said: “It is difficult. There were five of us there and the four lads had a totally different philosophy on how this team should play than what I had.
