Greater Manchester Police has launched an arson investigation following the fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre, in Salford, yesterday.
Eight fire engines dealt with the fire at its height, which caused 'significant damage' to the site. Officers are now hunting for the people responsible for the devastating fire, which has forced the Liverpool Street leisure centre to remain closed.
A GMP spokesman said: "We are investigating a fire that occurred at a leisure centre on Liverpool Street in Salford. We were called to reports of the fire at 3.05am on Friday, May 10 2024. Officers attended along with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and a scene remains in place while officers carry out their investigation. No injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made at this time, however enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
Salford city mayor Paul Dennett told the M.E.N.: "Everyone here at Salford City Council and our colleagues at Salford Community Leisure are extremely saddened to see the reports of the major fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre.
"The incident took place overnight and has caused significant damage to the building. Emergency services were called and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the police remain on the scene dealing with the incident.
