THERE is something special about finding a butterfly sitting on a leaf long enough for you to take a photograph.

Beautiful creatures need warm welcome

It is quite selfish but most butterflies will sense our presence and flutter off.

Another reason it is great to see butterflies is that they appear to have decreased in number over the past decade. This year butterfly and moth sightings have dropped by 14 per cent in summer, compared to last year.

Climate change, habitat loss and the use of pesticides are not helping our butterfly population, according to the experts.

In spring, I noted fewer common blue and orange tips flying around the grassy areas close to my home.
