Striker Delap, 20, had put frustrating loans at Stoke and Preston behind him last season to really hit form with Hull, scoring seven goals for the Tigers and playing a key role in their chase for promotion to the Premier League.
However, the striker has now been ruled out for at least three months after suffering a knee injury, with surgery still not ruled out.
"Liam had an assessment and he's going to need another assessment in three weeks," said Hull boss Liam Rosenior.
"He's looking at hopefully two to three months minimum and it's a real shame for him, for us and for everybody connected with the football club because he's been such a bright spot. It's an issue in his knee, but hopefully it can be fixed without surgery and that's what we're hoping for.
