THE number of patients going to hospital with issues related to tooth decay has more than tripled in Manchester hospitals over the past three years, a new investigation has shown.
There was a 235 per cent increase in diagnoses of tooth decay at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust's seven sites between 2021 and 2024, according to new Freedom of Information request (FOI) data obtained by Public Interest Lawyers.
It comes amid huge waiting lists for NHS dentists in the UK, with many places now considered to be 'dental deserts' where 100 per cent of dentists are not taking on new patients. Earlier this year, a damning report into NHS dental services by the Health and Social Care Committee called for 'urgent and fundamental reform' citing a YouGov poll showing almost a quarter of the UK population are not registered with a dentist.
