Every time I hear about the Lancashire Wildlife Trust's willow tit projects I think: "Here is a bird that we can really help". And it is a bird that really needs our help.
In 1984, the Greater Manchester population was estimated at 300 pairs, it is believed to be less than 120 pairs in 2024. Numbers in the UK have fallen by more than 90 per cent since the 1970s, making the willow tit our most endangered small bird.
Some of the problem appears to be that the willow tit loves scruffy, scrubby woodland.
