THIS morning, I counted 50 starlings waiting on the telegraph wires behind our garden, waiting for me to feed them. I counted them but only after I heard them squawking to get my attention.
As I sit here at my 'personal working from home space/office, I have sight and sound of the bird table and what a racket! There is a wood pigeon in the middle of the table surrounded by squabbling spotty birds.
It is a starling jamboree in my garden, and it's costing me a fortune feeding them and the aforementioned pidges... along with blackbirds, sparrows and the odd jackdaw.
In spring, the garden was a filling station for jackdaws when they were nesting in a nearby chimney but they have moved on.
I see the odd young bird, not yet fully coloured. The raiding party has headed off until they get back together to form a winter clattering for warmth, security and companionship.
