Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say they were called to Eleanor Street in Wigan at around 12.30pm on Saturday.
When they arrived, they discovered a man, 37, had died.
Members of the public had tried to save the man's life by carrying out CPR before police and paramedics arrived, they said.
A woman, 28, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of his murder and remained in police custody for questioning on Saturday night and yesterday morning.
"GMP launched a murder investigation and a scene has been put in place at the address whilst officers carry out enquiries" the force said.
