FRESH calls are being made for a clampdown on dangerous knives as new figures show thousands have been carried on Greater Manchester's streets in recent years.
A new scheme will launch this month encouraging people to hand over their deadly weapons.
The Home Office surrender and compensation scheme will apply to knives and machetes with a serrated edge. Retailers and members of the public will be able to surrender the items and claim £10 in return.
It comes as a M.E.N. investigation earlier this year revealed how quickly fearsome weapons could fall into the hands of shoppers across Greater Manchester. A 13-inch knife with a serrated edge was purchased from a Stockport shop in a matter of minutes.
