The atmosphere was heavy with grief at the terminals of Kochi and Delhi airports as the bodies of 45 migrant workers killed in a devastating building fire in Kuwait were returned home on Friday. The death toll of Indians from the tragic incident has risen to 46, with one more succumbing to injuries overnight, according to Kuwaiti authorities.
"One of the injured died overnight," confirmed Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya.
The massive fire broke out early Wednesday in a sixstorey building in Kuwait's southern Ahmadi Governorate, home to 196 migrant workers, mostly Indians. An electrical short circuit in the room of the guard on the ground floor has been identified as the cause of the fire, which spread rapidly, catching residents off guard as they slept. Most victims died from smoke inhalation as they attempted to flee. Many were unable to escape to the rooftop because the door was locked.
