UN says Israeli tanks burst into peacekeeper base

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations again accused Israel on Sunday of violating international humanitarian law after Israeli tanks stormed a UN peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate, with growing concern over the safety of United Nations peacekeepers in the volatile region.

According to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of a UN base before dawn and forcibly entered the premises. The tanks withdrew after a brief incursion, but shortly after their departure, artillery shells exploded just 100 metres away from the base. The resulting smoke, potentially laced with toxic substances, caused 15 UN personnel to seek medical treatment despite wearing gas masks.
