'India installs over 3 lakh 5G sites in 10 mos'
The Business Guardian|August 02, 2023
India’s 5G rollout has been hailed as the world’s fastest, with over 3 lakh 5G mobile sites installed across 714 districts within just 10 months of the service’s launch on October 1, 2022. Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this significant milestone on social media platform Koo. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are the two telecom operators leading the 5G rollout in the country.

The data shared by the minister highlights the impressive progress of the 5G rollout. Within five months of the service launch, 1 lakh sites were installed, and this number doubled to 2 lakh sites within eight months. Now, after 10 months, the number has surpassed 3 lakh sites, covering a vast number of districts.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi officially launched 5G services on October 1, 2022, and within just eight months, the country had achieved 2 lakh installations across 700 districts. Presently, the 5G network is available in all 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The speed and scale of the 5G rollout are a testament to India’s commitment to technological advancements and its ability to adapt to emerging digital trends.

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, calling the 5G rollout a “Telecom Kranti” or a revolution in the telecom industry. He emphasized that India is experiencing rapid progress in the telecom sector, and the 5G rollout is a crucial part of this transformation.

The 5G spectrum auction conducted in August 2022 saw telecom service providers bid a total of Rs 1.50 lakh crore for the 5G spectrum allocation. This substantial investment in the 5G infrastructure has facilitated the rapid deployment of 5G sites across the country.
