Currently mired in debt restructuring negotiations, Sri Lanka faces significant challenges in reaching agreements within reasonable time frames. Wickremesinghe highlighted the immense pressure the country faced in meeting external debt obligations, amounting to $6 billion annually as of 2022. This burden, constituting 9.5 percent of the GDP, proved unsustainable.
"We aim to alleviate this burden to 4.5 percent of the GDP through debt restructuring," Wickremesinghe, who also serves as the country's finance minister, emphasized.
