BLACKOUTS: RESIDENTS, BUSINESS FACE POWER CUTS IF CITY DOES NOT PAY ESKOM BILLS
Johannesburg residents could have a dark Christmas if the stand-off between Eskom and City Power over a multibillion-rand debt continues.
Through City Power, the city of Johannesburg owes the power utility almost R5 billion, with an additional R1.4 billion due at the end of November.
Eskom issued a notice on Thursday threatening to implement power cuts across South Africa's economic hub if the debt was not settled. The city has until 12 December to convince Eskom why it should not face electricity disconnections.
However, City Power responded yesterday by giving the utility just five days to retract the notice or face legal action.
"We are committed to ensuring uninterrupted access to electricity for the people of Johannesburg," said group financial officer Tebogo Moraka.
"We urge Eskom to retract its public notice and engage in genuine, good-faith negotiations to resolve these matters constructively."
Residents often complain to City Power about being overcharged and now it is City Power that is crying foul.
The entity said it had been overbilled by R3.4 billion, stated that it had an appeal over the amount pending since July 2024.
