On January 14, Uttarayan begins with the Sun's entry into Capricorn, celebrated widely as Makar Sankranti. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, the festival is known as Uttarayan, while in Southern India, it is celebrated as Pongal. This day is considered exceptionally auspicious and is believed to be fruitful for initiating new ventures, performing yajnas, vows, and even marriages, as it is regarded as the day of the gods.
