Two policemen sustained injuries during the fierce encounter. The encounter took place near the Hardoi Branch Canal under the jurisdiction of the Puranpur police station around 5 a.m. Acting on intelligence inputs, Punjab police traced the location of the wanted militants to Pilibhit.
The militants, all from Punjab's Gurdaspur district, were prime suspects in a grenade attack on a police outpost in Gurdaspur on December 19. According to officials, the trio were on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by the police team. Upon being surrounded, the militants opened fire indiscriminately, using AK-47s and pistols. In retaliation, the police neutralized all three militants after a prolonged exchange of gunfire.
