Precautions after bypass surgery

Recovery from bypass surgery involves a month-long period of care and adaptation: Hospital stay and initial recovery: You will typically stay in the hospital for about seven days, including three days in the ICU.

In the ICU, monitoring devices and tubes are gradually removed as you stabilize. Most ICUS now follow fast-track recovery protocols.

On the first day after surgery, you may sit at the edge of the bed.

By the second day, you can sit in a chair and begin short walks.

Pain from fresh stitches is normal but diminishes significantly by the second and fourth days post-surgery.

Mobility progress: Initial walking sessions last 5 to 7 minutes, gradually increasing daily. By the end of the first month, you should be walking for about 40 minutes a day, divided into two 20-minute sessions.
