Residents of Bengaluru, including concerned civil society members have expressed anguish over the delay in the conducting of elections for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The polls for the city council were due in 2020, were originally delayed due to the Covid pandemic and still haven’t taken place.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah obersaw a 2,500 kilometre human chain on the International Day of Democracy.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy had retorted that holding BBMP polls would be upholding democracy and not the symbolic display of the human chain.

Namma Whitefield convenor Sandeep Aniruddhan lambasted the State government for not conducting local body polls under the 74th Amendment of the constitution.

“The amendment which decentralizes powers to the local elected body is non-existent here.
