While it issued a statement "strongly" opposing military action from countries outside the continent, the African Union (AU) offered a more ambiguous view on any intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), which has said it is prepared to send troops into Niger if diplomatic efforts to restore democracy fail.
The union said that while it noted the stance of Ecowas, it would ask its commission to examine the implications. On Monday, Algerian state radio said the country had refused a request by France to use its airspace for a military operation in Niger. France has denied it made the request and it's unclear what kind of operation the broadcast was referring to.
