IT is hard to believe that, until now, despite its long and important back story, there has never been a serious attempt to provide a fulsome overview of the history of Plympton.

The dominant partner locally throughout most of human history 'Plympton was a borough town when Plymouth was a fuzzy down' Plympton has a wonderful story to tell and so I've put together a bit of a reference work to fill the gap.

It is a colourful, and wonderfully well-illustrated romp through the back pages of a town that spawned one of the country's most famous artists, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Not only was the great man born there and schooled there, he also inspired a number of other nationally known artists who followed him at Plympton Grammar Benjamin Haydon, Charles Locke Eastlake and James Northcote. Reynolds and his cohort also induced other leading artists to come and visit to paint the wonderful scenery and settings in the south west corner of Devon, including JMW Turner who tenuously liked to describe himself as a Devonian.
