PLYMOUTH Argyle have been encouraged to ‘keep being as brave as they are’ by Millwall manager Gary Rowett as the 2022/23 League One champions continue to adjust to life in the Championship.
Rowett was impressed by Steven Schumacher’s Pilgrims even though his side beat them 2-0 at Home Park on Tuesday night after second-half goals from Zian Flemming and George Saville.
Millwall have been in the Championship since 2017 so have plenty of experience now at that level, as does their manager, who has now beaten Argyle in all five of his matches against them during his career, with the previous four coming during his time at Burton Albion.
The Pilgrims had 66% of the possession against Millwall and 22 goal attempts but the visitors’ game plan of sitting deep, enticing their opponents forward and hitting them on the counterattack worked out well for them.
Rowett gave an interesting perspective on Argyle and the particular challenges of playing in the Championship when he spoke to the media after the match and was asked by The Herald what words he would have for Schumacher and his players.
“Just keep doing what they are doing, keep being as brave as they are,” Rowett replied. “I thought they were excellent. I think Steven has done an absolutely fantastic job.
