Plymouth City Council's cabinet committee heard how the city had been thrust into the national media spotlight by violent disturbances fuelled by social media disinformation, in the wake of the killing of three young girls at a dance class on Merseyside on July 29.
As a result, protests - including racist incidents, the burning of a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham and the wrecking of a Liverpool library - spread across the country, and in Plymouth several police officers were injured as groups clashed in the city centre, with anti-immigrant protestors on one side of Royal Parade and counter protesters on the other.
