Darts world stunned by the death of Cornish

FRIDAY darts is usually a celebration of the best darting talent in the city but a cloud emerged over the Plymouth City Super League Division A fixtures with the passing of Pete Cornish during match play.

The wonderful man was playing for Indian A at Bluebird B when 'Corndog', as he was affectionately known, passed without warning.

A friend to everyone and one of the very best in his hay day, the lovable character will leave a hole in the community after being taken so suddenly doing what he loved until his last breath, playing darts.

The game itself wasn't completed for obvious reasons but the section that was played before the tragic event saw Simon Washington nail two 180s on his way to ten tons for the home side.

Cornish's team-mate Mark Hatherley added his team's only maximum during a 3-1 loss to Washington and the game was abandoned at 6-3 to Washington's team.

In Kings Arms B's 6-5 loss at King Billy, Simon Kelly (30.67) produced a faultless display for the defeated team in the individual phase with legs in 17, 17 and 15 darts in his 3-0 win.

Kelly and team-mate Johns provided the fire power in the scoring phase of play for the defeated team with 12 and 11 tons respectively.

For the victors, Antony Hayman shone with 15 three-figure visits including three of the four maximums from the Devonport team.

Lee Doncaster added the fourth 180 to his ten-ton haul and his night ended with a 3-1 singles win that left the scoreline nicely poised at 5-5 going into the final singles rubber.

Paul Goundry led his team home with last leg shoot-out win by 3-2, which came in spite of Paul Carpenter's 127 checkout that was both the best checkout of the game and match week across all fixtures.

Cornwall Gate once again relied on fireworks from Simon Stevenson, who nailed 15 scores of a ton or more to help his team to a 7-4 win over Ker St.

Stevenson added a 180 to his ton tally whilst the former PDC Tour Card holder was supported well by Matt Vosper with ten ton-plusses.
