A STAGGERING 14,000 second homes 'sit empty' in Cornwall as locals struggle to buy a property or find a place to live. This has increased by another 1,000 properties since last year, placing Cornwall as England's leading county where people own a second home.
Cornwall has retained its status for the second year as the second home capital of England, with a 7.5% rise in empty or holiday properties this year. As a result, its putting locals try- ing to get a foot on the property lad- der at a disadvantage.
Campaigners have warned that while some of the homes welcome tourists during peak season and even year-round, others are brought for investment and are left empty by their owners. It comes after Corn- wall Council's pledge to introduce a 100% council tax premium on second homes from next April.
