The team have once again been hit by the cruellest of luck, which started when their heat leader, Nico Covatti, broke an arm and a leg when riding back in Argentina in January. He was unfit for the start of the season and the bad hack has continued ever since.
Just when things looked to be on the up – prior to last week’s meeting with Redcar Bears – Covatti was ruled out as his injuries continued to trouble him. While he was adequately replaced by the excellent Troy Batchelor, Dan Thompson went down with Covid, which ruled him out, and Ben Barker crashed in heat three when in front, suffering injuries that not only ruled him out of the rest of the meeting, but Saturday’s British Riders championship at Belle Vue as well.
If you are a Gladiators fan, then keep everything crossed because Thompson is over his illness and back in the team tonight, while Barker has also declared himself fit to ride. There’s no Covatti again, but Batchelor is back as guest in what looks a pretty formidable septet.
