Last week, against Poole, the Gladiators led by 16 points at one stage before losing points in the last third of the meeting, which allowed the Pirates to claw the deficit back to two points heading into the final heat 15. Thankfully, a 3-3 saw the Gladiators home and it was a similar story against the Scorpions.
This time, May’s men were ahead by ten points after 11 heats following back-to-back 5-1 wins in heats nine and ten, but the Scorpions reeled off a 4-2 and 5-1 to again send the meeting into a least heat decider.
However, captain Kyle Howarth and track specialist ben Barker pulled off a superb 5-1 to win both the heat and the meeting – by eight points – to the delight of the Coliseum crowd.
“It’s a much better performance from the team, we chucked a few points away last week being 16 points up (against Poole) last week and today, we chucked some points away being nine, ten points up, so we seem to be making it hard for ourselves later on in the meeting but, look, it’s a positive to win by eight and we take off from there,” Howarth said.
The Gladiators captain has certainly had an excellent start to life in Plymouth and he was the top scorer on the night scoring 12+2 from his five rides.
