Improved Gladiators get no luck in narrow defeat at Redcar

PLYMOUTH Gladiators turned in a much-improved display at Redcar Bears on Friday and with a little more fortune, they could have returned from the north east with their first away win of the season.

REDCAR BEARS......................48

PLYMOUTH GLADIATORS..........41

After 12 heats of a meeting that the Bears just held the advantage throughout, the Gladiators looked on course to level the meeting at 39-all when captain Kyle Howarth and Richie Worrall were on a 5-1.

However, Redcar’s Danny King fell on lap two, which forced the race to be stopped, much to the frustration of the travelling Plymouth contingent as he failed to clear the track in time. King was rightly excluded for being the cause of the stoppage, but the Bears Charles Wright then won the re-run with Worrall stuck at the start line after his chain had snapped, so what would have been a 5-1 heat win to the Gladiators ended up being a 3-2 win for the Bears and saw them lead 41-36 instead heading into the final two heats.

A 5-1 in heat 14 sealed the win before Plymouth won the final heat 4-2 to finish on the wrong end of a 48-41 scoreline.
