PLYMOUTH Labour General Election candidate Fred Thomas has defended his military record after Tory opponent Johnny Mercer accused him of lying and called him “a real-life Walter Mitty”.
Mr Thomas, fighting to unseat Mr Mercer in Plymouth Moor View, stressed he is a decorated ex-Royal Marine who served for seven years, rising to the rank of captain.
Special forces top brass have vouched for Mr Thomas’ military career and his ‘operational experience’, but details cannot be confirmed as Mr Thomas is unable to discuss much of his service due to the highly sensitive and recent nature of his role.
But Mr Mercer claimed his opponent had “lied throughout” hustings held in Plymouth on Thursday.
