A PROPOSAL for new homes in a Cornish village would be detrimental, according to councillors who spoke passionately against the plan prior to its rejection by Cornwall Council.
The public gallery was packed with concerned residents, the busiest it has ever been, at a meeting of Cornwall Council's east sub-area planning committee in Bodmin on Monday.
Councillors were making a decision on an application to build eight bungalows, split as four open-market properties and four affordable homes, on land adjoining Duck Lane in Trematon, a small village two miles outside Saltash.
The application was recommended for approval as it was considered appropriate in size and location, which is near the Grade II listed Trematon Manor House. Planning officer George Shirley said there was a need for affordable housing in the Saltash area, which has over 500 households on the housing need register.
The council had received a letter of objection from residents, with over 70 people commenting on the proposals on the council's online planning portal, the majority of whom were against the plan.
