Protesters clash in city centre as tensions flare

HUNDREDS of protesters clashed in Plymouth last night when two different groups of demonstrators converged on the city centre.

Riot police wearing helmets were keeping them separate on opposite sides of Royal Parade, as tensions rose between the rival factions.

Objects were thrown, including smoking flares and cider cans according to one onlooker, as police strove to keep order.

One report claimed that a mosque in St Judes was under attack, but as the Herald went to press, that could not be confirmed. However, police did say they were aware of 'an incident' at the mosque and were deployed in the area.
