Landlord Stephen Earp called time on his 17-year stint at the hostelry after lunchtime trading, but said staff will remain in limbo as the listed 15th-century building’s owner is unable to say when a new tenant will take over.
Earlier this year, Mr Earp decided it was not economically viable to continue running the Meavy watering hole when a new lease demanded it stay open until 10 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Burrator Parish Council, which owns the property, found a new tenant but has now said the pub will have to shut for an unspecified amount of time for “decorating and maintenance”.
Mr Earp said up to 10 staff have been left “in limbo” by the council’s decision. He had hoped for a seamless takeover by the new tenant and called the situation “unacceptable”.
