Wildgoose and Brookes prevail over their rivals
The Herald|February 29, 2024
IT WAS a top of the table clash in the mixed and potential title decider when Alice Wildgoose and Gary Brookes faced Fiona Crutchley and Nick Haley.

Wildgoose and Brookes prevail over their rivals

Alice and Gary were the more consistent and attacking pair and took the points with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. However, they are only a few points apart with Nick and Fiona just ahead and trying to stop Alice and Gary taking their third title in a row.

A couple of great returns from Dudley Tolkien and dropshots from Janet Butler helped them take a game in the second set when they played Fiona Crutchley and Nick Haley, but this was not enough to stop Nick and Fiona taking the match 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

There was an all-Hill Lane match between Debbie Wilson and sub James Spurgeon and Stephanie D'Haussy and Alan Mayes with Debbie and James taking the match 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, while Alex and Alex Stephenson took their first win of a difficult first season winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-5 against Dudley Tolkien and Janet Butler.

Hilary Picton and Linda Trebilcock had to dig deep to overcome the attacking play of Sue Gale and Sue Newberry in Ladies A. They really struggled to return Sue Newberry's deep low forehands interspersed with Sue Gale's backspin drop shots, but Linda and Hilary won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Ann Short and sub Sandy Johnson battled hard when they played Nicky Trevaskis and Fiona Crutchley, but it was Nicky and Fiona that won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.
