THE world’s last surviving ocean-going paddle steamer has paid a surprise whistle-stop visit to Plymouth – but could be back again next year. The famous PS Waverley steamed into the Sound yesterday on her way from London to home port Glasgow.
The vessel docked to take on fuel and also for a trial to see that it could berth at Commercial Wharf. Harbour master Richard Allen said it is hoped the Waverley will be able to visit next year and stay longer as part of the 150th anniversary of the port authority.
He said the visit had been planned for a year, even though it surprised onlookers when the ship steamed into the Barbican.
Mr Allen, of Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, said: “It has taken a lot of hard work to get it here.
