Fisher one step from joining lucrative heavyweight party

Johnny Fisher is one of a dozen British heavyweights waiting to fill the void when Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury finally call it a day.

Fisher one step from joining lucrative heavyweight party

Fisher is just 25, unbeaten in 11 fights and this Saturday he has sold over 4,000 tickets for the Copper Box, or the “Copper Bosh” as his father John Fisher calls it, for a fight with Croatia’s Alen “The Savage” Babic. No British boxer since Ricky Hatton has sold so many tickets for his fights; Fisher seems to handdeliver just about every ticket. His fans live just a few stops down the line from Stratford, so the Olympic Park venue is ideal.

“The fans have been amazing from the start,” Fisher said. “They have increased with each fight – enough came out to Las Vegas for the last fight.” The fight in Las Vegas lasted less than a round. Fisher has that perfect touch with his fans and that’s why they have multiplied during his short career. He has also stopped or knocked out 10 of the 11 men he has beaten and that helps.

Tiafoe takes Alcaraz to the brink in five-set cliff-hanger

The bare facts are that Carlos Alcaraz is through to the fourth round of Wimbledon and Frances Tiafoe is not, but that does not begin to explain the theatre that unfolded under Centre Court's closed roof. The crowd hung on every ball in a match soundtracked by gasps and hollers, as the third and 29th seeds put on a show.

Spain saved by late header as hosts Germany bow out

There's no second summer fairytale for Germany, as it's instead Spain who have the happy ending. For now. Mikel Merino ensured they rose above it all, with a brilliant header in the 119th minute. The big question as to whether they go and actually win Euro 2024 is what the cost of this 2-1 victory over the hosts will be. Toni Kroos didn't get his grand farewell, either, as he instead contributed to a match that often turned ugly.

Sunak's error? Promising too much and delivering too little

After such an emphatic - if not downright rude - rejection by the electorate, it takes more than a little imagination to recall the day that Rishi Sunak became prime minister. On 25 October 2022, Sunak stood outside No 10 and made his first speech in charge of the country. In it, he made his first mistakes, too.
