Protests in Pithampur over Union Carbide, MP CM calls for caution

MAJOR protests erupted on Friday in the Madhya Pradesh town of Pithampur, a day after the government transported the toxic waste from Bhopal's defunct Union Carbide factory to the treatment-storage-disposal facility (TSDF) in the town for incineration.

Backed by local leaders of leading political parties, the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, the protest turned fiery when two protestors, identified as Raj Patel and Rajkumar Raghuvanshi, sustained burn injuries after attempting self-immolation by pouring petrol on themselves.
