Intended to ease congestion at Chennai Central, the move has been strongly opposed by a section of rail passengers, terming it irrational and poorly planned. Official documents suggest the proposal was recently approved by general manager R N Singh.
A Southern Railway spokesperson said the proposal is still in the nascent stage and the detailed project report has not been finalised. "Due to various operational and land issues at Royapuram and Salt Cotaurs, the fourth terminal has been proposed at Perambur. We have received in-principle approval from the railway board," said an official.
