THE authorities' apathy over providing TNUHDB high-rise tenements with fire safety measures has left a huge section of residents burning with rage. Though the more recently built tenements contain some fire safety features, the residents have not yet been trained on how to use them.
In the wake of a fire accident in an apartment in Kuwait that recently claimed the lives of more than 40 migrant labourers, including seven Tamils, TNIE visited tenements at various locations across Chennai to check if fire safety measures were in place, considering the high density of residents in these buildings. The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) tenements visited included K P Park in Pulianthope, Ezhil Nagar near Kannagi Nagar, Perumbakkam, Gowthamapuram in Perambur, Vyasarpadi, and Thalankuppam near Ennore.
