OBCS, EBCs account for 63 pc of population: Bihar caste survey

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar released the much-awaited caste-based survey, on Monday, which showed that other backward caste (OBC) and extremely backward class (EBC) together account for 63 per cent of the state’s population.

The report of the castebased survey conducted in Bihar was released at a news conference in Patna.

According to the report, Bihar has a population of over 13 crore people, of which the EBCs comprise 36.01 per cent of the population, the OBCs 27 per cent, scheduled castes (SCs)19.65 per cent, scheduled tribes (STs) 1.68 per cent, while the upper castes constitute 15.52 per cent of the population. Among the backward classes, Yadavs constitute 14.26 per cent of the population while the Kushwahas and Kurmis are 4.27 per cent and 2.87 per cent, respectively.

“The extremely backward class is 36.01 per cent, the general category is 15.52 per cent and the Other Backward Caste (OBC) is 27 per cent,” Vivek Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary, said.
