The Trinamul Congress regained the Dhupguri Assembly Segment Tafter its candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy won in bypoll after neck and neck fight.
TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy secured 96,961 votes while his nearest candidate Tapasi Roy of BJP ticket bagged 92, 648 votes. TMC candidate Mr Roy won by 4,313 votes.
The Congress backed CPIM candidate Iswar Chandra Roy managed only 13,666 votes.
Four more candidates were in the fray. About 1216 people cast their vote in NOTA.
The BJP candidate Bishnu Pada Roy won the seat in 2021. The bypoll was necessary after the death of the BJP MLA.
In 2016, TMC had bagged Dhupguri Assembly Segment. This segment was a red bastion since 1977 to 2011.
Reacting to the final results, visibly upset the BJP candidate Tapasi Roy said: “Announcement of Dhupguri sub division is the main reason behind such upsetting results.”
“I was confident, I will win because I highlighted basic issues for real development. Secondly, the people were happy with the BJP MLA and their aspirations were not fulfilled. Lastly, party leaders and workers did a lot for me during campaigning,” said Nirmal Chandra Roy.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said: “ I thank the people of Dhupguri for reposing faith in us and voting decisively in our favour in the critical byelection to the Assembly constituency.”
