Students from a vernacular education background, be it Telugu or Hindi or Tamil will find it harder to cope in IIT. From my experience, students do not have a technical but a linguistic barrier as the mode of communication is English in IITs because the concepts and technicalities are all in English. When such students were in coaching, this issue was taken care of because instructors teach in a mix of vernacular and English. This issue sometimes gets coupled with the sudden switch from coaching to the IIT education model, which is a universal issue for all students,” explained professor Anurag Mehra, Associate Faculty, Center for Policy Studies, IIT Bombay.
