Ex gratia must for scavengers’ kin, says court

A HC bench said if the death occurred in a septic tank, the state should compensate the family of the deceased scavenger and later recover the money from the contractor

Hyderabad: In a huge relief to the families of manual scavengers who die while cleaning manholes, drainages, septic tanks, etc., the Telangana high court on Thursday made it clear that the state government will have to pay compensation to the kin regardless of whether the scanvengers were engaged by a government organisation or they are on a private work.
