Hyderabad: Despite the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) desilting of drains, a key component of pre-monsoon works for the civic body, the heavy rains that lashed on Wednesday has once again exposed the pathetic condition of choked nalas and stormwater drains across the city.
Areas such as Mir Alam Tank, Khairatabad, Yakutpura, Begumpet, BS Maktha and several other nalas were clogged with garbage as residents especially in Old City constantly throw the waste and plastic bags inside open drains, in the absence of garbage bins.
Officials from the sanitation wing explain that at least 68 drains were found clogged with solid waste such as plastic covers, clothing, paper, debris, and other inorganic garbage.
Ironically, even the stormwater drains adjacent to the GHMC headquarters too were choked with solid waste.
Another major issue found is establishments encroaching on the nalas resulting in flooding of an entire area. A case-in-point would be the Moazzam Jahi Market road, where several tent shops result in both sewage and solid waste overflowing the roads.
