The Olympiad gives you a chance to meet the right kind of opposition: Anand
He landed in Chennai just a few days ago, but Viswanathan Anand says he was clued into everything that was happening back home with regards to the 44th Chess Olympiad preparations. “When I was in Germany, photos of the Napier Bridge (in Chennai) appeared (online). It’s very nice – the whole bridge is black and white. Then, there were posters of Thambi (the mascot of the Olympiad this year) all over the city. It’s nice to see chess fever building up in Chennai. I think it will have a lasting impact. I was very excited when we won the bid (to host the Olympiad in India, in Mahabalipuram) in February-March. This is the first move and it’s exciting,” shares an elated Anand on the sidelines of a chess masterclass in the city, ahead of the Olympiad.
Anand has played a huge role in making chess popular in the country by winning multiple titles and is a big inspiration for the chess community, which has come together to make the Olympiad a reality in India.
