25k preventive arrests in Ahd, Surat

Ahmedabad/Surat: There is still a fortnight to go for the first phase of voting for the assembly poll in Gujarat, but the police have already made more than 25,000 preventive arrests in Ahmedabad and Surat alone.

The cops seemed extra cautious as they charged into action, arresting people under sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Prevention of AntiSocial Activities Act (Pasa) since the poll schedule was announced on November 3. The arrests were being made on the state election commission’s orders to instil a sense of safety among voters and organise free and fair polls in Gujarat.
