New Delhi: Overweight and obesity, the two common lifestyle problems that plague nearly 17% of India's population, are annually costing the country $35 billion, that's over 1% of its current GDP. If steps are not taken to curb their spread, India will suffer a loss of nearly $850 billion, which will be 2.5% of its GDP, in 2060. This projected economic cost of overweight and obesity is the third highest in the world after China ($10 trillion) and the United States ($2.5 trillion), the report published in the BMJ Global Health says.
Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/ m2 to 29.9 kg/m2 in adults and obesity as BMI of 30 kg/m2 and above. For children, overweight is defined as weight that is one to two standard deviations above the median and obesity as more than two standard deviations above the median.
