Mumbai: The ambitious plan to accredit every Indian higher education institute through the provisional accreditation for colleges (PAC) scheme launched earlier this year has been nixed. Ironically, the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) launched the PAC scheme to improve its own record of the number of institutes it had assessed so far. But the council, meant to be the vanguard of quality, floated the PAC as a watered-down version of the rigorous quality checks that must be in place for assessing institutes. So, if rolled out, the PAC would better NAAC’s report card in terms of quantitative performance, but with dilution of qualitative parameters.
