New Delhi: Power Minister R K Singh on Monday introduced the contentious Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022 – which aims to usher competition and accountability in power distribution – in Lok Sabha and requested Speaker Om Birla to refer it to the parliamentary committee on energy amid vociferous protests from a clutch of parties which said it usurped states’ rights and will lead to “indiscriminate privatisation”.
Separately, All India Power Engineers’ Federation chief Shailendra Dubey claimed an estimated 27 lakh power engineers and workers across the country abandoned their workstations and took to the streets in protest against the bill. But there was no disruption in supply.
