New Delhi: Accidents involving cyclists grew 36% between January and May this year against the same period last year. While 12 cyclists were killed in 2021 in 55 accidents, this year 17 cyclists died in 75 road accidents involving cyclists. Not wearing protective gear, absence of dedicated cycling lanes and the lack of empathy of road users are some reasons why cyclists are vulnerable on the road.
Police attributed the increase in accidents involving cyclists to the post-Covid rise in the number of cyclists on city roads. "During the pandemic, many people took to cycling for fitness, for fun or just out of boredom," observed a police officer. "Then with the city opening up and the traffic back to its former density on the roads, accidents rose."
